A Film Worth Watching

I go to a lot of movies, yet typically don't write about them. Mostly because there's such a vast variety of opinions on how films are shot, scripts are written, and the quality of an actor's performance. However today, I'm making an exception.

My husband and I decided to see The Woman King, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood. The Trailer had enticed me in.

It's naturally violent being that the story was inspired by the actual all-female unit of warriors who protected an African kingdom in the 1800s. I longed for something other than just another typical action flick. I considered that this was perhaps one written by and for tough, handsome-looking men and then at the last minute, due to some savvy producer's decision, a script re-write switched the characters from male to female.

I'm happy to report that was NOT the case.

During the end of the film, emotions gripped me and I fought (unsuccessfully) to hold back tears. I walked out of the theater literally unable to speak. Once my voice returned, we talked and talked about how the script held a plethora of incredibly important topics—mentorship, inclusiveness, empowerment, pride, honor, allegiance, forgiveness...need I go on?

Yet it did not feel preachy nor contrived. The strength and power of this film remained palpable as the beauty of the story shone through clearly. Thankfully, it wasn't a superhero movie (I watch them all, sometimes reluctantly). Ironically, it really WAS a superhero movie with the incredible bravery of the characters and the equally talented filmmakers.

If Viola Davis does not receive an academy award for her outstanding acting, I don't know who should. She gave a phenomenal performance. And several other actors did as well alongside Thuso Mbedu and Lashana Lynch (unknown to me prior).

To add to the glory of this movie, the director and writers were all women. Many of the production team were female including the director of photography, Polly Morgan, and editor, Terilyn A. Shropshire.

I don't recommend movies often (reference my first statement), but in my opinion, this one is a must see. Go watch The Woman King and tell me what you think!
