Do You Have a Story to Tell?
Diane M. Dresback

Why would anyone want to take on writing an actual book? It can be a lot of work, but it can also bring about a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment, not to mention passing along precious moments or your creative imagination.

Based on my interactions with friends, family, acquaintances, and strangers, I can guarantee most people have a story they like to tell. We recognize this fact when having even a short conversation with another person, and they convey a situation or experience, or tell a comedic or dramatic story.

If you’ve been with a significant other for a while, they usually end up telling stories over and over! Yes, you have to listen to them multiple times and might notice how things change occasionally, but either you enjoy them again or politely excuse yourself. My husband has so many funny and entertaining tales that I’ve often said he should write them down. Someone may have encouraged you to do the same.

Over the years, I've been asked a myriad of times about different aspects of writing, and I can only relay my own experience with novels and nonfiction. What’s worked and not worked in getting to the finish line.

A few months ago, I decided to spend some time documenting my view on things in the hopes that it would help others who may be considering authoring their own book, whether fiction or nonfiction. Do I know everything about it? Nope. It's an ever-evolving opportunity to learn by reading, listening, watching, and through trial and error.

I wrote Book Idea? Getting Started (BIGS) to give people a glimpse into my process (in order to inspire their own) and the steps and considerations for writing and publishing a book. Two big questions discussed are: Why do you want to write, and who are you writing for?

If you’ve ever considered sharing real or fictional stories in a book medium, BIGS is meant for you! It encourages you to contemplate needed decisions in your writing and publishing, find answers to many of your questions, and offers ideas to set yourself up to succeed, all with motivation to move forward.

BIGS will be available by the end of this year (2026), so if it sounds like something you or someone you know would be interested in, I’d love to let you know via email when it goes on preorder.
