Creative Connection

I always liked this photo snapped a few years ago while preparing to shoot the Reminisce teaser. With shot logistics solidified with my director of photography, set design going up around me, the crew busy and cast in makeup, I literally sat in the space where we were to film. 

It was time to sink into the mood of the characters and the ethos of the story. In other words, to emotionally get where I needed to be. To become connected. 

As I've been working through a new writing project over the past few weeks, I find myself "sitting" with my main character a lot. Last week, we met in a coffee shop for several hours. Regardless of the bustling activity going on around us, we remained linked. I became lost in what she felt and she wasn't happy, not at all. The suffering with internal conflict affected her every decision which in turn reinforced more gut-wrenching turmoil.

I love getting into the heads of my characters whether in a screenplay or a novel. Story is about relaying their struggles and emotions. Being in tune makes them so much more real than just words on a page. 

There is something amazing that happens inside quiet spaces of connection. Of course, art, music, movies, books and other activities help touch and engage us to live in the moment. I'd love to hear when and where you experience your creative connections.
