My Two Mothers
Motherhood can come in many shapes and forms and can last for varying periods of time. It often means doing what's best for the child regardless of the pain for the adult.
Terri and Millie did not share the same generation. They were born over 2,600 miles apart. As children, they experienced contrasting family dynamics and backgrounds. Their formal education and work histories did not overlap. By all accounts, these women lived far and away vastly different lives from each other.
Yet, they both shared a belief in the opportunity of adoption. Ultimately, the sacrifice of one became the blessing of the other. A decision based solely and mutually in love.
I retain an immense respect for adopting parents who provide for the emotional and physical needs of a child (of any age). Those that welcome children openly into a new life of acceptance and belonging.
My humble appreciation also goes to those women who decide to carry a baby and selflessly embrace adoption as a way to fulfill the family desires of others.
Most of us have been touched by adoption in some way or another. If not first hand, surely through someone we know. Every situation is as unique as the circumstances and individuals involved.
Perhaps children receive the chance to meet their biological parents. Not all situations turn out positive for there are no guarantees. But, sometimes they work out better than imagined.
I was blessed with long relationships with both these wonderful, beautiful, and strong women—my two mothers. And I am extremely thankful for their decisions and actions.
Terri and Millie contributed to who I am now. I wish I could call and talk with them. Alas, both have moved on from this life. Yet my many memories and profound gratitude to each will never cease.
